Aix-en-Provence Exhibition
L'Imprimerie nationale, histoire de caractères
As part of the national celebrations around the 450th anniversary of the death of Claude Garamond, typographer and engraver of characters, the Saint-John Perse Foundation and Cité du Livre, Aix-en-Provence, in partnership with the Imprimerie nationale present the exhibition "The Imprimerie nationale, a character's story".
Within the Méjanes' library, this exhibition, very visual, highlights some fifty old books printed by the Imprimerie Nationale (sixteenth-nineteenth centuries), typographical equipment that enabled their fulfillment and techniques (punches, characters' boxes ...): King of the Greeks, Garamond, Romain du Roi or Grandjean, Buis of the Regent (Chinese characters wood), hieroglyphs, cuneiform, Tibetan, Arabic, Irish … so many characters now classified 'historical monuments'; used since the fifteenth century.
