Luce vignette punch
Gutenberg created a hard metal punch with an upside down motif engraved in relief. The punch is pressed into a block of copper (matrix or mould) inside which a piece of type is cast by filling the mould with molten type-metal.
Louis-René Luce, Louis XV’s engraver, designed the Luce (or poetic type), derived from Grandjean. He also engraved countless vignettes made up of mobile elements enabling infinite ornamental combinations.
